May Ball 2009
MAY BALL
Held each year on the nearest Friday to May 24th Queen Victoria’s birthday.
This was Empire Day, with the Queen’s Birthday Parade,
followed by a Ball, at Government House.
Tradition has continued with the Ball,
held under a change of name, The May Ball,
and a change of venue, the Town Hall.
The event became a two-nighter;
with Stanley hosting the first night,
with campers hosting the second.
The first May Queen was selected by popular vote in 1949.
Voting for a Prince Charming began in 1960.
Various organisations have hosted the event,
with money raised, used for local youth organisations.
Today the event is organised by the Falkland Island Scout Association.
